PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) has been around for decades, used in orthopedics and dentistry for the stimulation of healing properties and growth factors in joints, soft tissues, tendons and ligaments. Recently, it has been used for enhancing skin rejuvenation, with multiple dermatology studies further demonstrating that PRP can stimulate the activity of hair follicles for the growth of new hair.
What is PRP?
Your medical provider first draws 10 ml of blood from the large vein in your arm and the blood is subsequently centrifuged or spun to separate the platelets from other blood components. The entire process takes about 10 minutes for the platelet-rich portion of the blood to be extracted.
The injured part of the body is anesthetized with a local anesthetic and PRP is subsequently injected into the affected area.
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a leading area of regenerative medicine, using the body’s own cells to stimulate tissue growth. The therapy uses a high concentration of autologous platelets found in the patient’s own plasma and are either injected or applied directly to the tissue.
PRP treatments have grown in popularity in recent times, with patients looking to enjoy their long-term benefits with little to no side effects. The versatile procedure can be used for hair regrowth, acne scars, and skin rejuvenation.
A PRP injection treatment is a simple three-step process that includes drawing blood from the patient, processing the blood to separate the platelets, and then injecting the platelet-rich plasma into the area needing regeneration and rejuvenation. It can produce a dramatic improvement in hair growth as well as stimulate natural skin regeneration depending on the treatment area.
Benefits of Facial PRP Injections:
- Smoothens fine lines, wrinkles, and folds
- Skin regeneration from within
- Reduction in redness and acne scars
- Enhanced, more even skin tone
- Increased hydration
- Increased production of collagen
HOW DO PRP INJECTIONS WORK?
Platelets are the part of the blood associated with healing wounds and repairing damaged cells and tissues. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a procedure that separates cells from the rest of the blood for a concentrated formula of platelets for triggering skin cell regeneration. As tissue is more rapidly restored, it also aids in producing more collagen for younger, firmer, more supple facial skin.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT?
The process takes less than an hour with very little discomfort. Recovery from PRP injections is immediate, with most patients continuing with their day after the treatment. However, patients may experience redness or pinprick bleeding at the site of injection.
Results from our NYC PRP injection treatment including increased hydration and more even skin tone will become visible in about three to four weeks. Improvements in the volume are noticeable around four to six weeks and continue for several months as natural collagen regenerates. It is advised to get two more treatments spaced four to eight weeks apart for optimal results in skin regeneration.
PRP has no risk of an allergic reaction or any side effects as the product is an extract of the patient’s own blood. Patients may however experience minor irritation, inflammation, or bruising at the injection site, which disappears within 48 hours.
WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE?
PRP injection therapy is excellent for the treatment of fine lines, wrinkles, uneven skin tone, acne scars, and loss of volume. It stimulates collagen production deep within the skin structure, helping to restore skin quality naturally. It is particularly ideal for persons looking for a natural look that improves with time. PRP injection treatment comes with a swift recovery and long-lasting results, with little or no allergic reactions.
PRP For Skin Volume – A Natural Alternative To Fillers
PRP can be used in stimulating healing after cosmetic dermatology procedures. Additionally, the treatment has been shown to help in promoting the body’s own natural collagen production, helping to deliver a fuller and more youthful skin appearance.
Injecting PRP into soft tissue is great for persons with minimal volume loss who cannot go for traditional dermal fillers. PRP injections into soft tissue deliver the growth factor platelets directly into the affected area to stimulate collagen. Each injection comes with chances of bruising and mild swelling. Consequently, clients are advised to avoid consuming alcohol 24-48 hours before the treatment. Blood thinners, such as aspirin, Aleve, and similar medications should also be avoided unless on the doctor’s prescription.
PRP For Skin Rejuvenation
PRP can be combined with any laser or microneedling treatment to expedite healing while also decreasing the appearance of scars and promoting the production of collagen.
Microneedling: The Platelet Rich Plasma is placed directly on the skin, pre and post the microneedling procedure. One of our favorite treatments is the combination of PRP with our “Intensif” treatment, radiofrequency microneedling. PRP is pushed into the tissue using tiny needles, creating tiny channels for the absorption of the PRP. Patients often leave with a mask of PRP and a moisturizer, with most of them benefitting from 3 treatments, spaced one month apart. However, persons with deeper acne scars may require 5 monthly treatments.
PRP can help initiate the regenerative process, reversing skin aging and damage to the face. PRP has become increasingly popular for different purposes, including
Microneedling with PRP
Neck areas for reducing creepy skin
Reversal of skin damage in the d’ecollet’e
Repair of cellular damage in the hands
After the procedure
Patients can resume their daily routine activities almost immediately after the procedure. However, it is best to avoid strenuous activities such as heavy exercise or lifting. It is also possible to experience some pain during the injection. You are advised to avoid using anti-inflammatory medications for up to 48 hours after the injection.
